Meet Martina
Meet Martina Olivíková, a 15-year-old from the Czech Republic who embodies curiosity and ambition in everything she does. Currently studying at Slovanské gymnázium Olomouc, one of the country’s more prestigious grammar schools, Martina has already proven her dedication to academics—after all, she was accepted into the eight-year program at age ten, joining just 60 successful candidates out of 400 applicants. It’s a challenging environment where her teachers often remind students that they are the “elite of the nation,” but Martina takes it all in stride, balancing chemistry, maths, languages, and more with a bright outlook on her future.
Martina envisions pursuing chemical engineering, yet she keeps her options open. In the years ahead, she hopes to study abroad, possibly do a post-grad in a foreign country, or embark on an exchange year. Her love for exploring different cultures shines through in another personal goal: visiting every European capital city. She’s currently enrolled in the DofE (Duke of Edinburgh) program, learning new skills—like crochet—and challenging herself through contemporary dance. After completing the bronze level, she’s looking forward to tackling the silver and eventually the gold award, seeing each step as an opportunity to travel and grow.
But Martina’s path hasn’t always been straightforward. She spent four years as a competitive swimmer, a passion she ultimately set aside when the pressure to perform became overwhelming. Recognising that her studies came first, she made the brave decision to quit. This led her to the world of contemporary dance, an art form she finds liberating because “there is no right way” to express yourself. Trading swimming’s strict techniques for dance’s fluid creativity was scary at first, but she now considers it one of her best decisions.
With each new challenge she faces—whether it’s preparing for university, mastering a new dance routine, or planning her next travel adventure—Martina brings a spirit of openness, courage, and adaptability. She’s excited about all the possibilities that lie ahead, ready to combine her love for science, languages, and culture into a life rich with experiences. And no matter which route she takes, one thing is clear: Martina’s journey is one defined by curiosity, reflection, and the readiness to embrace change.
